SATC is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I’ve always envied Carrie.
Now, her love life is… questionable at best. And yes, her obsession with Big makes my eyes roll so hard I’d probably stage a full intervention if one of my friends talked about their ex the way she does. But her career? That’s a different story.
Even when the internet labelled her as selfish or a pick-me, I always admired one thing about her: her commitment to writing.
Carrie takes the smallest details from her life (conversations, awkward dates, friendships, insecurities) and turns them into columns. She makes meaning out of her everyday experiences, and I’ve always loved that about her. There’s something so fascinating about watching someone turn life into material.
Because if I’m being honest, I do the exact same thing.
If someone says something funny or interesting in conversation, I’ll quietly open my notes app and write it down so I can remember it later. I’ve definitely taken inspiration from my friends’ experiences and stored them away to shape my own characters, and I write fiction.
I even have a running list of “baby names” on my phone for future characters.
And yes, I once said I wanted to be a Vogue writer the second I graduated… mainly because Carrie worked there.
But beyond the aesthetic and the fantasy, what I really admire is her mindset. She doesn’t wait for inspiration to strike in some grand, cinematic way. She treats her life, messy, mundane, complicated as it may be, as material.
Everything becomes a story.
A bad date becomes an anecdote. A fight with a friend becomes dialogue. A fleeting thought on the bus becomes the seed of a chapter.
Having a Carrie Bradshaw mindset means paying attention. It means being curious about the world around you and seeing potential in the everyday. It’s about believing that your experiences (no matter how small) are worth documenting and exploring.
So if you ever catch me typing something into my notes app mid-conversation… just know it’s nothing personal.
I’m simply doing research.
